Katharina Bjelland sees beauty in commercial objects, packaging and labelling.
She takes materials, objects and slogans out of their intended purpose or function to explore their semiotics in a new context. Removed from their original intention they highlight cliches and reveal layered meaning. Bjelland explores contrasting effects by putting found, mass produced objects and materials next to traditional fine art references and media, creating juxtapositions within a work. Irony and humour are used as a tool to invite critical contemplation. Bjelland’s appropriations like to question originality, authorship and authenticity and playfully explore the nature and definition of art itself.
